MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS) --US production of natural soda ash in May slumped by 3% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Wednesday.
US production fell to 833,000 tonnes, down from 861,000 tonnes in April, the survey said.
Ending inventories for May 2012 were 243,000 tonnes, 18% lower than the preceding month's inventories of 298,000 tonnes.
Wyoming trona production in May was 1.33m tonnes, according to the data.
Mexico and Brazil were the largest importers of US soda ash from the beginning of the year, importing 348,000 tonnes and 213,000 tonnes, respectively.
Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.
US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
