MIAMI, Florida (ICIS)--US phthalic anhydride (PA) August contracts are set to decrease by 5 cents/lb ($110/tonne, €90/tonne), following the 5 cent/lb decline in the US orthoxylene (OX) July contract, market participants said on Tuesday.
US PA contracts usually move by the same amount as the previous month’s OX contract price because OX is the main feedstock.
July PA contracts were assessed by ICIS at 81-87 cents/lb FOB (free on board) for molten grades and at 82-88 cents/lb DEL (delivered) for flake grade.
PA is a key intermediate in the production of plasticisers, which are used to make products such as flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Major US PA producers include BASF, Koppers and Stepan.
