MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez inaugurated a butene plant at its Ana Maria Campos petrochemical complex on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo over the weekend, the government said on Tuesday.

The 1-butene is necessary to produce polymers, Chavez said.

The Venezuelan government said in May that it planned to start a new $113m (€93m) polyethylene (PE) plant at the complex.

The plant is expected “to help boost the transformative plastic project in our country”, Chavez said in May.

Also in May, Chavez announced that a $60m investment will be made at the same petrochemical complex to open a new polypropylene (PP) plant.
