SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) will pioneer production of metallocene linear low density polyethylene (mLLDPE) in India by the end of this year, a company source said on Thursday.

Its 140,000 tonne/year high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant in Nagothane is currently being converted into a swing plant, to allow the unit to produce mLLDPE, the source said.

“The plant will have the capability to swing between C6-mLLDPE and HDPE, but depending on the market condition, we hope to run full on mLLDPE,” the source said.

India fully imports its mLLDPE requirements at about 100,000 tonnes/year, with the country's consumption estimated to grow at an annual rate of 10%, market players said.

mLLDPE resins are suited for high-performance film applications such as food and medical packaging, shrink wrap, heavy duty sacks, retail bags and sacks, agriculture film and other non-packaging applications.
