TOKYO (ICIS)-- Japan ’s chemicals firm Mitsubishi Gas Chemical has on Thursday posted a 41% year-on-year decrease in its fiscal first-quarter net profit to yen (Y) 4.19bn ($53m) as sales barely grew.

Net sales in the three months to 30 June 2012 inched up 0.1% year on year to Y115.4bn, with operating profit declining 80% to Y1.12bn, the producer said in a statement.

The company’s aromatic chemicals segment swung to a first-quarter ordinary loss of Y752m from a profit of Y420m in the previous corresponding period, partly on declines in selling prices of purified isophthalic acid.

The segment’s net sales in June quarter 2012 were up 0.9% year on year to Y32.1bn.
