TOKYO (ICIS)-- Japanese refiner JX Nippon Oil & Energy has shut its 17,000 bbl/day No 2 vacuum distillation unit and the lube oil production facility at its Mizushima A refinery following a fire on Sunday, a company official said on Monday.

The company has not decided when to restart the facilities, the official added.

A fire broke out at the No 2 vacuum distillation unit at 11:23 local time on Sunday, and it was extinguished at 18:57, JX Nippon Oil & Energy said in a statement.

“We have inventories, and we will also try not to disrupt [lube oil] supply by shipping products from other refineries,” the official said in Japanese on the phone.

The company is yet to find out the cause of the fire as an investigation by the local authorities is currently underway at the plant, the official said.

The Mizushima A refinery also houses the 60,000 bbl/day No 3 vacuum distillation unit, which is currently in operation, said the official.

Vacuum distillation units produce the base material of lube oil, according to JX.

Meanwhile, last month the company shut its facilities at the Mizushima B refinery for safety reasons.

“Most of the facilities [at the Mizushima B refinery] are still shut, and [the refinery] is not really producing [products],” the official said.
