LONDON (ICIS)--Sibur Petrochemical India, a subsidiary of Russia-based major Sibur, has started operations in Mumbai, India, it said on Tuesday.

The primary focus of Sibur Petrochemical India will be the construction of a 100,000 tonne/year butyl rubber facility in Jamnagar in India’s western Gujarat state.

Sibur said the subsidiary company will initially conduct detailed research of the petrochemical products market in India and South Asia as it looks to extend its geographic reach.

The plant is being built as part of a joint venture with Indian petrochemicals major Reliance Industries.

“The new subsidiary will work alongside Indian partners, as well as provide support to Sibur employees coming to India to carry out installation and start-up work at the new plant,” Sibur said.

Sibur said that India is the fastest growing market for synthetic rubber globally, importing up to 75,000 tonnes of synthetic rubber per year.
