SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals is currently running its 400,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in Iwakuni-Ohtake at around 60% of capacity following its restart in mid-July, a company source said on Thursday.

“We will keep the low rate for some time due to product quality concerns and also partly because of poor PTA margins,” the source said.

The plant was shut following a series of explosions at a 7,600 tonne/year resorcinol unit at the same site on 22 April this year.

The company is expected to shut the PTA plant again in early September this year for safety inspections following the 22 April incident. The shutdown is expected to last about a month.
