HOUSTON (ICIS)--US polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exports in June were 226,857 tonnes, up 16.2% from the 195,295 tonnes shipped in the same month last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.
But June exports were down 3.8% from the 235,745 tonnes shipped in May, the ITC said.
Exports had begun to rebound in the second quarter after declining earlier in the year as buyers waited to see when the declining prices would reach bottom, according to market participants.
Tonnage to Canada, the main export market, rose somewhat from May to June. Shipments of 27,428 tonnes to China showed a sharp increase from the 14,247 tonnes shipped in May, while and shipments Russia staying essentially flat at 18,271 tonnes.
Imports of PVC were lower year on year, falling 642 tonnes to 20,084 tonnes in June. That was also 505 tonnes lower than the 20,589 imported in May, according to the ITC.
Canada was the main source of PVC imports, shipping 14,496 tonnes in June, followed by Germany, Columbia and Mexico.
US PVC export prices were assessed by ICIS at $840-860/tonne (€680-697/tonne) FOB (free on board) US Gulf last week.
Major PVC producers in the US include Westlake Chemical, Occidental Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Shintech and Georgia Gulf.
