HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in June were 343,351 tonnes, down 2.2% from the 351,059 tonnes shipped in the same month last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.
Exports in June were also 4.7% lower than the 360,433 tonnes shipped in May, the ITC said.
Brazil led the way in importing US caustic soda in June with 113,437 tonnes, much less than the 170,568 tonnes that country took in May. It was followed by Australia at 62,766 tonnes. Australia did not receive any US caustic soda in May. Canada was next at 41,989 tonnes, down from the 49,439 tonnes in May.
Meanwhile, the US imported 106,643 tonnes of caustic soda in June, down 35% from the 163,938 tonnes received from abroad in the same month in 2011.
Taiwan was the leading source of caustic soda to the US at 29,901 tonnes in June, up substantially from the 24,482 tonnes shipped in the same month a year earlier. It was followed by Canada at 24,518 tonnes and China at 22,674 tonnes.
Major producers of US caustic soda include Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, OxyChem, Shintech, Dow, Olin and PPG Industries.
