HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production in July rose by 4 percentage points to 88% of capacity from June, a trade group said on Monday.
US chlor-alkali production in July was 1,017,854 tons (923,397 tonnes) of chlorine and 1,060,882 tons of caustic soda, according to The Chlorine Institute.
The trade group reported June production at 933,660 tons of chlorine and 971,000 tons of caustic soda.
The July numbers show a modest increase in production after a jump of 10 percentage points in June from May.
Market sources were unavailable to comment on the latest numbers. The May-June increase was believed to reflect strength in the seasonal US homebuilding sector.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the primary end-products in the chlor-alkali chain, is used extensively in home construction.
Major US chlor-alkali producers include Formosa Plastics USA, Georgia Gulf, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
