SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Germany's BASF announced on Tuesday that it is investing in a new 13,500 tonne/year basecoat plant in Shanghai to meet growing demand in China’s automotive sector.

Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.

The plant to be built at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park is expected to start operation in the first half of 2014, BASF said in a statement.

BASF Shanghai Coatings Co – a joint venture between BASF and Shanghai Coatings Co – will build the plant, the company said.

The joint venture is already running a production facility in the district of Minhang in Shanghai.
