Japan July PS output shrinks 3% year on year; exports fall 26%

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s production of polystyrene (PS) in July decreased by 3% year on year to 55,571 tonnes, reflecting lower internal demand and exports, data from the Japan Styrene Industry Association (JSIA) showed on Wednesday.

Compared with the previous month, however, July PS output was up by 29%, industry statistics showed.

Japan’s internal demand for PS in July was down 5% year on year and 1% lower month on month at 49,340 tonnes.

The country’s exports of PS in July at 1,583 tonnes were down 26% year on year and down 19% from June, JSIA data showed.

Meanwhile, production of styrene monomer (SM) fell 8% year on year to 215,691 tonnes, but the figure was up 7% month on month.
