China's imports of most petrochemical products rise in July

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China imported higher volumes of most petrochemical products in July, with significant increases seen for methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), butadiene (BD) and butyl acrylate (butyl-A), official data showed on Thursday.

Naphtha imports climbed by 42% year on year and 85% month on month to 243,920 tonnes in July, while BD imports grew by 711% year on year or 149% month on month in July to 34,664 tonnes, according to China Customs data (see Table 1).

BD market players held an optimistic outlook for August in view of rebounding BD prices from June and BD unit shutdowns in July and August, and thus they purchased more imports for stocking, said a BD industry source.

However, the BD market is facing oversupply and prices have dropped from the middle of July, the source added.

MEK imports were at 696 tonnes in July, up by 375% from June, and butyl-A imports were also at 696 tonnes in July, up by 133% from June, the data showed.

However, imports of some petrochemicals fell month on month in July.

China imported 95,137 tonnes of ethylene in July, an 11% drop from June. The country imported 3,078 tonnes of DOP in July, down by 35% year on year and a 68% drop from June, as well as 43,838 tonnes of phenol, a 23% month-on-month decrease, the data showed.
