SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s methyl methacrylate (MMA) inventories in July decreased by 1.2% month on month, official industry data showed on Friday.

As at end-July, the country’s MMA inventories stood at 26,966 tonnes, lower by 332 tonnes compared with end-June levels, according to the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPCA).

July's lower inventories may be attributed to reduced operating rates at the Otake facility of Mitsubishi Rayon Co (MRC) – Asia's largest MMA producer, market sources said.

MRC‘s acetone cyanohydrin-based MMA line at Otake had been running the line at the site at a reduced rate of 70% since mid-June on shortage of feedstock hydrogen cyanide.

Japan's overall MMA output in July, on the other hand, increased by 1,783 tonnes or 4.4% month on month to 42,329 tonnes, JPCA said.

The country can produce 554,000 tonnes/year of MMA, according to ICIS data.
