HOUSTON (ICIS)--The port of South Louisiana has been closed in advance of approaching Hurricane Isaac, a port employee said on Tuesday.

The employee said all port offices were closed on Monday afternoon. Hurricane Isaac will likely make landfall as a hurricane by late Tuesday or early Wednesday near New Orleans, Louisiana, the National Hurricane Center said.

The port covers a 54-mile (87km) district on the Mississippi river between New Orleans and Baton Rouge and includes a number of petrochemical plants and refineries. Cargo handled there accounts for over 50% of all Louisiana imports and exports, according to the port.
