BASF starts acrylic dispersions production in South Africa

LONDON (ICIS)--BASF has opened an acrylic dispersions production plant at the Umbogintwini Industrial Complex in Durban, South Africa, the Germany-based chemical company said on Monday.

Capacity details of the plant were not disclosed.

The company said the production facility will help it serve customers in the fast-growing South African and Sub-Saharan African coatings and construction industry.

“With this new facility, we are well positioned to support our customers’ growth in South Africa and its neighbouring countries,” said Jacques Delmoitiez, president, responsible for BASF’s business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“South Africa as an emerging market is very attractive for us. By investing into local production of our high-tech acrylic dispersions we can serve our customers in Sub-Saharan Africa even more effectively and flexibly,” said Christoph Hansen, senior vice president dispersions for adhesives and construction in Europe.

BASF said the investment in the dispersions production plant is part of a strategy to strengthen its presence in Africa.
