HOUSTON (ICIS)--US August sales of passenger cars and light trucks increased by 19.9% year on year, an industry publication said on Tuesday.
Autodata, reported that sales of passenger cars and light trucks in August totalled 1,285,202 units, up from 1,072,283 sold in the same month a year ago.
Month on month, sales improved by 11.4% from July.
Sales in the first eight months of the year are 14.7% ahead of the 2011 sales for the same period.
The US automobile industry comprises one of the major segments for chemicals such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nylon 6 and nylon 6,6, polycarbonate (PC) and several synthetic fibres and paints and coatings.
The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each automobile contains an average of $3,297 (€2,605) worth of chemicals.
Toyota sold 45.6% more units in August 2012, with 188,520 leaving car lots.
Chrysler sold 148,472 units, which is 14.1% more than it sold in August 2011.
Honda had sales of 131,321 units in August, which is up by 59.5% over the same month last year.
Nissan sold 7.6% more cars and light trucks with 98,515 units sold in August, compared with 91,541 vehicles it sold last year at this time.
General Motors Corp sold 10.1% more cars in August than August 2011, and continues to lead all US automakers in sales for the month, reporting 240,520 units sold compared with 218,479 it sold in 2011 during August.
Ford Motor Company sold 196,749 cars and light trucks in August, up by 12.6% from the number it sold last year in August.
For the year, General Motors has sold 1,757,470 cars and light trucks in 2012, an increase of 3.7% over last year’s sales through August.
Ford has sold 1,510,614 units through August 2012, compared with 1,424,851, a 6.0% increase year to date.
Toyota has sold 1,399,514 cars in 2012 through August, an increase of 30.4% over last year at this time when it just topped the 1m mark at 1,073,073.
Chrysler became the fourth carmaker to sell more than 1m units in 2012, with a total of 1,108,629 units sold through August, a 25.7% gain over sales last year through August.
Honda has sold 949,247 units through August, an increase of 23.2% for the year.
Nissan has sold 774,577 units through August, an increase of 13.7% over the units sold last year through August.
