HOUSTON (ICIS)--US refiner Marathon Petroleum has started shutting down its entire Detroit refinery in Michigan for a planned turnaround that will allow it to process heavy Canadian oil, a company spokesman said on Friday.
The 106,000 bbl/day Detroit refinery will be shut for 70 days as units are tied in to the $2.2bn (€1.7bn) Detroit Heavy Oil Upgrade Project, which began in 2008.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year and will increase the refinery’s capacity to approximately 120,000 bbl/day.
