TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s domestic shipments of foamed polystyrene (PS), or PS paper, increased by 2.4% month on month to 7,610 tonnes in August, reflecting increased demand for roll trays and laminated bowls, official data from an industry association showed on Tuesday.

Domestic shipments of PS paper in August showed a 0.9% increase from the same period a year earlier, according to data from the Japan Foamed Polystyrene Sheet Industry Association (JASFA).

Domestic shipments for roll trays rose by 4.5% month on month to 3,510 tonnes in August, but decreased by 5.9% from August 2011, the data showed.

The country shipped 2,370 tonnes of PS laminated bowls in August, a 4.9% increase from July and up by 5.3% from the year before, according to the association.

PS paper is primarily used for packaging food products such as fresh seafood and meat, as well as bowls for instant noodles.
