HOUSTON (ICIS)--US ethyl acetate (etac) imports in July doubled year on year, mostly on greater shipments from Mexico and South Africa, according to data released on Tuesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
Etac imports totalled 4,689 tonnes, up by 103% compared with 2,306 tonnes in July 2011, reflecting the growing gap between American and European prices in the niche chemical.
Etac exports, generally smaller than imports, also increased. Exports totaled 1,597 tonnes, up by 55% compared with 1,029 tonnes in July last year, on larger shipments to Canada and Mexico, which are the largest export destinations.
Etac is a major ingredient in inks and coatings, particularly in nail polish. Major US etac producers include Celanese and Eastman Chemical.
