HOUSTON (ICIS) --US maleic anhydride exports totalled 3,835 tonnes in July, down by 29% from the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Tuesday.

Exports in July were 9.2% lower than the 4,222 tonnes shipped in June, the ITC said.

Nearly 50% of MA is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), which are used heavily in the recreational boating industry and related uses. Demand in that sector remains dampened in the still-sluggish economy, according to market sources.

Mexico was the top destination for US MA exports in July at 1,255 tonnes, followed by Canada, the UK and Colombia.

Major US MA producers include Huntsman, LANXESS, Ashland and Flint Hills Resources.
