SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Qatargas is supplying its Japanese customers with more than 20m tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the short term, in addition to long-term supplies, the Qatari firm said late on Wednesday.

The additional supply is meant to help Japan with energy security in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in March 2011 that affected the country’s dependence on nuclear power.

“Qatargas has increased its support for Japan by 11m tonnes from the original 9m tonnes of short-term supplies announced last autumn,” the company said in a statement.

“These volumes are in addition to the several new long-term LNG supply agreements reached between Qatargas and its Japanese customers over the last 12 months,” it added.

Qatargas has a production capacity of 42m tonnes/year of LNG.
