LONDON (ICIS)--Solena Fuels plans to build a refinery in eastern Germany to produce bio-based synthetic paraffinic kerosene for Germany’s airline Lufthansa, the US-based firm said on Thursday.

The plant in Schwedt, northeast of Berlin, would convert more than 520,000 tonnes/year of waste biomass into jet fuel, diesel fuel and electricity, Solena said.

Solena added that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Lufthansa on the project. The airline would use the fuel as a “drop-in, certified jet fuel with the aim to be prospectively used on commercial flights,” Solena said.

Financial details and timelines for construction or completion were not disclosed.
