MELBOURNE (ICIS)--China’s Zhenjiang LCY is running its 24,000 tonne/year methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) plant at Zhenjiang in Jiangsu province at a reduced rate because of a feedstock hydrogen supply shortage, market sources said on Monday.

The plant has been operating at about 50-60% capacity after being restarted on 13 September as a result of insufficient hydrogen supply, the sources said.

Zhenjiang LCY took the plant off line on 6 September after technical issues forced its hydrogen supplier to cut supplies.

Normal supply of hydrogen may not be restored for the remainder of September because of ongoing technical issues, which means that Zhenjiang LCY may continue to cap its MIBK output for the rest of September, the sources added.

Zhenjiang LCY is a unit of Taiwan’s LCY Group, which also operates a 20,000 tonne/year MIBK plant at Linyuan in Taiwan.

MIBK, which is derived from acetone, is used as a solvent for industrial paints and thinners, and in the production of rubber chemicals.

Other MIBK makers in China include Ningbo Zhenyang, Taizhou Petrochemical and Jilin Petrochemical.
