HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 1.715m dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda from January to August, up by 0.3% from the 1.720m dmt consumed during the same period in 2011, the country’s association of chlor-alkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Tuesday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda between January and August was 933,097 dmt, 2.7% higher than the 908,578 dmt produced during the same period in 2011, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 798,938 dmt in 2012, down by 2.4% from 818,652 dmt imported in 2011. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 758,141 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 94.9% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2012 are paper and cellulose with 209,453 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 153,599 dmt, aluminium with 84,134 and metallurgy with 48,357 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil is stable, in the face of weaker-than-expected economic activity, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
