HOUSTON (ICIS)--US refiner Marathon Petroleum is interested in buying BP’s Texas City refinery, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The deal could be worth up to $2.5bn (€1.9bn), according to reports in the UK's Financial Times and other media.

A spokesman for Findlay, Ohio-based Marathon Petroleum did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BP has said that it plans to sell the Texas City refinery. The plant ranks as the US’ third largest refinery with a processing capacity of 460,000 bbl/day, according to information on BP’s website

Last month, BP agreed to sell its 266,000 bbl/day Carson refinery in California and related logistics and marketing assets to Tesoro for $2.5bn.
