ATLANTA, Georgia (ICIS)--The trend across all market segments of the polyurethane (PU) industry remains positive in North America, an industry participant said on Monday.

Capitalising on sustainability and energy conservation will assist in continued industry growth, the source said at the 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Atlanta.

To meet future government fuel reduction requirements, the automobile industry will not only have to rely on improvements in engine efficiency but will also need to continue light-weighting car components.

This will provide significant opportunities for PU applications. Greater use of PUs will have the added benefit of improving the look, feel, sound and cost of automobiles, the participant said.

PU products will also have great opportunities in energy-efficient, sustainable homes, the source added, with the application of spray PU foams (SPF), board-stock and panels. The payback for the products is in energy savings, the source said.

In flexible PUs, specialty, or memory, foams continue to be a growth market, the source said.

The conference runs through Wednesday.
