SINGAPORE (ICIS)--AkzoNobel is building a new trimethylgallium (TMG) plant and will expand its trimethylaluminum (TMAL) unit at the company’s Battleground site at Texas in the US, the Netherlands-headquartered coatings and specialty chemicals maker said on Thursday.

TMAL is a feedstock for TMG, a high purity metal organic used in products such as light-emitting diode (LED) wafer production.

The expanded TMAL unit is expected to be completed in the third quarter of next year, while the new TMG plant will be ready in August 2014, the company said in a statement.

Financial details of the project as well as the capacity of the units were not disclosed.

The global LED industry is expected to surge over the next decade, driven by applications in displays such as PCs, laptops and tablet screens, according to AkzoNobel.
