HOUSTON (ICIS)--A worker died on Wednesday from injuries suffered from an explosion at the PennAKem plant in Memphis, Tennessee, according to media reports published on Thursday.

The specialty chemical plant shut down early on Monday after the explosion injured two people, who suffered from second-degree burns on 90-100% of their bodies.

The fire was extinguished, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the Memphis Fire Department said.

PennAKem makes furan- and furfural-based chemicals.

PennAKem is a subsidiary of Minakem, which produces fine chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).

PennAKem did not return calls for comment.
