SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s National Development and Reform Commission has approved the first demonstration area to explore shale gas in Shaanxi province, the commission said in a statement released on Friday.

The Luxiang Shale Gas Demonstration Area in Yan’an will be explored by local oil and gas company Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum, according to the statement.

The field is expected to have geological reserves of 150 billion cubic metres (Gm³) from 2011-2015, the stipulated period of China’s 12th five-year development plan for shale gas.

There are further plans to develop shale gas exploration technology and infrastructure in the area, as production in the domestic shale gas industry is expected to rise, the commission said.

Shale gas refers to natural gas that is trapped within fine-grained sedimentary rock formations. It has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the world.
