LONDON (ICIS)--Germany-based Evonik Industries plans to increase the production capacity for 1-butene at its Marl site by 75,000 tonnes/year, the specialty chemicals producer said on Monday.

The expansion would bring Evonik’s total capacity to 310,000 tonnes/year and make the company the world's top producer of 1-butene, it added. Evonik operates world-scale plants for 1-butene at its sites in Marl, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium.

Start-up of the new capacity in Marl is scheduled for 2015, and basic engineering for the expansion is largely finished. Evonik did not disclose details about the plant’s proposed construction costs.

“With this planned capacity expansion in Marl, our aim is to support the growth plans of our customers in Europe and overseas. Worldwide demand for 1-butene is increasing by about 5% each year," said Rainer Fretzen, head of Evonik's Performance Intermediates Business Line.

In the production of polymers, such as polyethylene (PE), 1-butene is used mainly as a co-monomer, Evonik said.

In August, Evonik began construction of a functionalised polybutadienes plant in Marl. The company said the plant, scheduled for completion in the middle of 2013, would have an annual capacity of several thousand tonnes and that the investment needed is in the mid double-digit million euro range.
