SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Nippon Shokubai has suspended operations at its 35,000 tonne/year maleic anhydride (MA) plant at Himeji, after an explosion occurred at the acrylic acid and super absorbent polymer facilities over the weekend, a company source said on Monday.

There is no information of when operations at the MA plant will resume and investigations of the explosion is ongoing, the source said.

At the moment, although there are some MA stocks in their inventory, shipping activity for all products has been suspended on the back of the explosion. Hence, MA cargoes will not be available to its customers, the source added.

A separate producer said it received a few enquiries from traders on Monday for cargoes of 50-100 tonnes to Japan and may take the chance to offer at about $30/tonne higher.

Spot MA prices were assessed at $1,740-1,780/tonne (€1,357-1,388/tonne) CFR (cost & freight) southeast (SE) Asia in the week ended 28 September, while September contract prices of MA were assessed at yen (Y) 150-190/kg DEL (delivered) Japan, according to ICIS data.
