EU chems producer price index returns to growth in Aug - Eurostat

LONDON (ICIS)--The EU chemicals producer price index has risen by 1.4% in August from July following two consecutive months of decline, according to estimated Eurostat figures released on Tuesday.

The EU chemicals producer price index had fallen 1.8% and 1.3% month on month in July and June, respectively.

The index for the 17-member eurozone during August also recorded an increase, rising 1.5% from July – ending a decline seen in the two previous months.

Compared with the same month in 2011, the chemical producer price index in August was 1.0% higher in the 27-member EU and up 1.5% in the eurozone, according to the EU statistics agency estimates.

The industrial producer price index for total industry in August, compared with July, rose by 1.0% in the EU and by 0.9% in the eurozone. In July, prices increased by 0.3% month on month in both zones.

“Among the member states for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Denmark (+2.9%), the UK (+1.8%) and Finland (+1.7%), and the lowest in Slovenia (+0.1%) and Latvia (+0.3%). Prices remained stable in Belgium, Hungary and Malta,” Eurostat said.

Year on year, the industrial producer price index for total industry in August increased by 2.7% in both the EU and eurozone.

“Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total index were observed in Bulgaria (+7.1%), Greece (+6.8%) and Cyprus (+6.7%), and the smallest in Malta and Slovenia (both +0.8%) and Austria (+1.1%). The only decrease was recorded in Sweden (-0.5%),” the statistics agency added.
