LONDON (ICIS)--The European Commission will investigate the proposed $4.9bn (€3.8bn) acquisition of DuPont’s performance coatings business by US investment firm Carlyle, it said on Wednesday.

DuPont and Carlyle announced the deal in August.

The Commission said that on a preliminary investigation the deal may fall under the EU’s simplified merger rules.

However, it called on interested parties to submit their comments within 10 days.

The Commission said Carlyle proposes to acquire the business via a Bermuda-based vehicle, Flash Bermuda Co. Ltd.

DuPont’s performance coatings business is exposed to European markets. DuPont had built out the business in Europe in 1999 when it acquired Herberts coatings in Germany.
