SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Malaysia’s BASF-Petronas on 1 October shut its 160,000 tonne/year crude acrylic acid (AA) unit because of a mechanical failure, a company source said on Wednesday.

The company expects to “soon” restart the unit following inspection works, the source said without specifying a timeline.

“Remedy work will be carried out in the coming weeks…[and] the plant will run at a reduced rate,” the source said.

The shutdown at the BASF-Petronas unit will expect to further tighten the supply of AA following the shutdown of Nippon Shokubai’s Himeji facility.
