SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Ellba Eastern has declared a force majeure on supply of styrene monomer (SM) and propylene oxide (PO), following an unexpected shutdown at its Singapore plant over the weekend, according to a document obtained by ICIS on Tuesday.

Shell and BASF, the 50:50 joint venture partners in Ellba Eastern, have confirmed the force majeure declaration that took effect on 7 October.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and will inform our customers if there are further developments,” a Shell spokesperson said in an e-mailed statement.

Ellba Eastern, in a notification sent to customers, said that the FM was issued because of a “mechanical breakdown” at its SM/PO plant in Jurong Island.

The plant can produce 550,000 tonnes/year of SM and 250,000 tonnes/year of PO.
