SINGAPORE (ICIS)--India’s overall production of vehicles fell by 7% year on year to 1.68m units in August this year amid weakening overseas demand and slowing economic growth, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Wednesday.

Overseas shipments of passenger cars fell by 27% year on year in August this year, while exports of motorcycles declined by over 7%, SIAM said without specifying the actual figures.

On the domestic front, overall vehicle sales fell by 3.9% year on year in August this year, with passenger car sales dropping by more than 18.5%, it said.

Motorcycle sales declined by almost 8.5% year on year in August this year, SIAM added.

The automotive industry is a major end-user of petrochemicals, including styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and plastics.
