LONDON (ICIS)--US-based producer Momentive has declared force majeure on its 100,000 tonne/year liquid epoxy resins (LER) Pernis plant in the Netherlands following a minor explosion, a company source said on Wednesday .
"Unfortunately, the unit yesterday suffered a minor explosion in an off-gas pipe system that has resulted in the unit now being taken fully down as we investigate the root cause and ensure safe start-up of the unit," the company said.
Momentive expects the plant to be down for at least seven days.
"[This] means that along with our current order backlog, we shall be unable to meet immediate order requirements," the company added.
This is the second time in less than a month Momentive has had to shut down unexpectedly because of technical difficulties.
In September, Momentive planned to initially shut down the same plant for 12 days, however, because of a technical glitch the shutdown lasted nearly three weeks, the source said.
