MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US-based Air Products’ South American joint venture Indura has opened an 84m tonne/day industrial gas plant in Puerto Varas in southern Chile, Air Products said on Thursday.
The facility, which will include a cylinder filling system, will serve local industry including the burgeoning aquaculture market, the company said.
The location of the plant, which is more than 1,000 miles (1,609 km) south of Chile’s capital Santiago, makes it the world’s southernmost industrial gas plant serving the merchant market, the company said.
Indura is the largest independent industrial gas company in Latin America and has an annual turnover of $478m (€373m), Air Products said.
The company has operations in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and a distribution network that extends to the US and Canada.
In June 2012, Air Products purchased a 67% majority stake in the company for $884m.
