HOUSTON (ICIS) --US caustic soda exports in August were 339,799 tonnes, nearly flat from the 338,587 tonnes shipped the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
Exports in August were down by 3.9% from the 353,596 tonnes shipped in July, according to the data.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda at 139,294 tonnes, followed by Australia, Canada and Jamaica.
Demand for caustic soda has remained relatively healthy, according to producers, although some buyers, particularly in the alumina industry, have said that their demand is low after a series of production curtailments this year.
Meanwhile, imports of caustic soda into the US in August were 108,911 tonnes, down 40.4% from the 182,824 tonnes received in the same month in 2011. However, August imports were 76% higher than the 61,726 tonnes received in July.
Major producers of US caustic soda include Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, OxyChem, Shintech, Dow, Olin and PPG Industries.
