HOUSTON (ICIS)--Tronox is countering an attempt to halt its mineral sands mining project in South Africa, the US-based titanium dioxide (TiO2) firm said on Tuesday.

Tronox said that the Mtunzini Conservancy had applied for an injunction to halt the early-phase construction of Tronox’s KZN Sands Fairbreeze mine project in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Tronox said it filed papers opposing Mtunzini's application in the Durban High Court.

“Tronox remains firm in its belief that the action by the Mtunzini Conservancy is without merit and that the early-phase construction, including site establishment and temporary access roads, that commenced in early October 2012 is within the required legislated framework,” the company said in a brief statement.
