US natural soda ash production surges by 9% in August

MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US production of natural soda ash in August jumped by 9% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Thursday.

US production increased to 1.02m tonnes, up from 933,000 tonnes in July, the survey said.

Ending inventories for August were 350,000 tonnes, 12% higher than the preceding month's inventories of 312,000 tonnes.

Wyoming trona production in July was 1.46m tonnes, according to the data.

Mexico and Brazil were the largest importers of US soda ash from the beginning of the year, importing 613,000 tonnes and 378,000 tonnes, respectively.

Indonesia came in third, importing 324,000 tonnes since the beginning of the year, according to the data.

Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.

US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
