SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Henan Kaixiang has started construction of a 20,000 tonne/year natural grade polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) in Henan, a company source said on Monday.

It is expected to begin production in 2013, with no exact start up date yet, according to the source.

Henan Kaixiang Chemical has an upstream 90,000 tonne/year butanediol plant which supplies BDO to the PBT plant at the same site.

Some market participants expect there might be an oversupply of PBT since another major plant – Chang Chun Plastics, is planning to start up a 120,000 tonne/year unit in China next year while demand is weak.

PBT is applied in the manufacture of automobile parts, computers and electrical devices.
