SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Hengli Petrochemical has started its 2.2m tonne/year No 2 purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant in Dalian over the weekend of 20-21 October, a source close to the company said on Monday.

The new plant has not achieved on-spec product yet, the source added.

The start-up has not affected PTA prices because of PTA maintenance shutdowns, including those at Zhejiang Yisheng Petrochemical’s 650,000 tonne/year PTA plant , Xianglu Petrochemical’s 1.65m tonne/year PTA plant, Chongqing Fuling Pengwei’s 900,000 tonne/year PTA plant and Yuandong Petrochemical’s 600,000 tonne/year No 2 PTA plant, a trader said.

The average operating rate of the country’s domestic PTA capacity is at about 72%, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.

Hengli Petrochemical in Dalian has a PTA capacity of 4.4m tonnes/year. Its first 2.2m tonne/year PTA plant was brought into production in September 2012 and it is running at around 80% capacity, according the company source.
