HOUSTON (ICIS)--Eastman Chemical has completed an expansion of its polyvinyl butyral (PVB) extrusion capacity at Ghent, Belgium, the US-based producer said on Friday.

Eastman’s plant in Ghent produces interlayer sheet products used to sound-proof windows in automobiles.

“These high performance interlayers assist in making cars quieter while helping to control interior temperatures and the overall energy performance of the car,” said Eric Nichols, vice president of Eastman’s Advanced Interlayers business.

Investment or capacity details were not disclosed.

Eastman took over the interlayers business as part of its $4.8bn (€3.7bn) acquisition of Solutia earlier this year.

Advanced interlayer products are part of Eastman’s advanced materials segment.

That segment had third-quarter sales of $559m, almost unchanged from the same period a year ago, according to Eastman's third-quarter results statement.

However, segment operating income for the three months ended 30 September fell 9.5% year on year to $57m because of lower sales volumes in Europe for advanced interlayer products and lower capacity utilisation, the company said.
