SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Thailand’s PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) has reduced the operating rate of its 515,000 tonne/year mixed-feed I-4 No 1 cracker at Map Ta Phut to 70% because of mechanical problems, a company official said on Tuesday.

The cracker encountered quench oil-related mechanical problems on 29 October, the official said.

The 1-4 No 1 cracker was running at 85% capacity prior to the rate reduction, the source said, adding that the cracker last experienced the same issue in late September.

“The problem is under investigation,” the official said, adding that the duration of the reduced output is unclear.

The company’s other 400,000 tonne/year I-4 No 2 ethane cracker at Map Ta Phut is currently operating at 90-100% capacity, the official added.

The official added that there will be limited impact on the ethylene spot market as the company did not plan to export any spot cargoes in November.
