SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Lonza will cut a total of 500 jobs over the next 24 months as part of its cost improvement program, the bulk of which will be at its operations in Visp, Switzerland, the Swiss firm said on Wednesday.

Boosting profitability at its production base in Visp would require a reduction of 400 positions, the company said in a statement.

“As required in Switzerland, a social plan [for the reduction in job positions] has been prepared and consultation with unions will be conducted over the next weeks. The final results are expected in November 2012,” the company said.

A further reduction of 100 positions in the company’s global operations would occur over the next 24 months, following a review of its corporate functions structure, Lonza said.

“This measure will help increase efficiencies of services delivered to the business globally,” it said.
