MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US ethylene glycol (EG) production in the third quarter fell by 13% year on year as production issues lowered supply, the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers said on Wednesday.
Estimated EG production totalled 671m lb (304,000 tonnes) in the third quarter, down from 768m lb in the third quarter of 2011.
While no reason was given by the AFPM for the 13% slide, during the third quarter the market saw a rash of production issues in the feedstock ethylene oxide (EO) sector, which caused EG producers to lower rates.
Compared with the second quarter of 2012, EG production was down 0.6%, from 675m lb.
October prices for US industrial-grade EG were 62.0-65.0 cents/lb ($1,367-1,433/tonne, €1,053-1,103/tonne) FOB (free on board) USG (US Gulf), as assessed by ICIS.
US EG producers include LyondellBasell, Huntsman, MEGlobal, Indorama and Shell.
