HOUSTON (ICIS) – US caustic soda exports in September were 358,931 tonnes, up 13.4% from the 316,610 tonnes shipped the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.?xml:namespace>
Exports in September were up 5.6% from the 339,799 tonnes shipped in August, the ITC said.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda at 128,496 tonnes, followed by Australia, Canada and Suriname.
According to market sources, US producers are increasing exports of caustic soda because of cost advantages compared to producers overseas.
Meanwhile, imports of caustic soda into the US in September were 120,442 tonnes, down 28.3% from the 167,889 tonnes received the same month one year earlier. Imports were up 10.6% from the 108,911 tonnes received in August.
Major producers of US caustic soda include Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, OxyChem, Shintech, Dow, Olin and PPG Industries.
